Self-Defense
Martial arts teaches students the discipline and self-confidence that enables them to igmore threats of aggression which could lead to physical confrontation. Yet when given no other choice, students are more than capable of handling themselves in a street situation. In Martial Art there are many differnet movements, practiced for developing each part of your body - which is important for your health as well as for self-defense. Through the practice of certain form, it is possible to correct many physical problems you may have - or to avoid those that may occur later in life.
Weapons
The mental and physical discipline developed dramatically increases whrough training with weapons, beyond that which can be achieved by "empty hand" alone. Through weapons training (Ship Pal Gye) one discovers an increased ability to use concentration. Reflex is quicker. Movement more smooth. Balance and timing are improved. The mind is more sharp, more clear, more intense. One learns to extend his concentration into the movement of the weapon itself, until the body, the mind, and the weapon become one.
Through the practice of Martial Arts, one learns determination and the ability to use full concentration toward specific goals, and to single-mindedly continue until you accomplish whatever it is you set your mind to. Striving to succeed and better one's self, students develop not only a self-respect, but a concern and respect for others. These true feelings of respect and concern have no price. You cannot buy this, nor can you force someone to do this. You must earn this respect. This type of respect is one which begins in each individual's heart and it is an expression of the concern one develops and most importantly, applies. This will bring, meaning, value, and quality of life. This must be applied for one to have this success. Many can say they have position and knowledge but it is true application that will bring this result. Position is based on what you have built and what has grown as a result of that effort. By using one's concentration and willingness to change and better one's self, one can earn a longer, healthier, and happier life. This type of training does take practice. But with the realization of the importance of strengthening the human mind and body, this knowledge will aid in giving you the patience and determination needed to continue.
Health
Building strength in character, in mind and in spirit is the most important reason that people have, for centuries, sought the opportunity to train in the martial arts. Training is not like investing in merchandise or other material things. Your training is an investment in life - your mental and physical health and well being. No matter who you are, you must take care of yourself. For the pain and all the effects of a neglected mind or body recognizes no amount of wealth, position or age. You have to earn for yourself your mental and physical health. Everyone is once young and once old. During the time you are young, it is sometimes difficult to see the importance of this, but when your age is older you will appreciate that you did develop yourself both mentally and phyically to the fullest.
In order to develop yourself in martial arts to a point where your mind and body are comfortably healthy and strong, you do not need a lifetime of practice. An individual that trains for about three years, three hours a week, can make self-accomplishments they will appreciate for the rest of their lives. An understanding of yourself will bring better relations between you and your family, friends, and business associates.
That - is a comfortable and happy life.
All instructors believe that the knowledge and correct use of the martial arts will result in better Americans and stronger communities.
